Texas Is The Reason

Day One (8/6/2010) Denton, TX

Left Atlanta yesterday at around 7:30pm.  Drove West all night, I took the first shift, Atlanta to Vicksburg MS, then turned driving duties over to Quanstar.  Fell asleep somewhere in Louisiana just before Evaready RAW took the helm.  Woke up when we were about 80 miles out of Dallas TX and got out of the car to get coffee only to emerge from the gas station to find the car gone.  I saw it go by through the door of the station as I was paying for my coffee but figured they were moving the car.  No such luck, they were GONE.  I reached into my pocket for my phone to call them but quickly realized it was in car.  I hung my head and sat on the stoop and as time passed panic began to set in and just as I was about to really lose it the car pulled up.  Disaster averted.  The rest of the drive went down without a hitch and we got to Denton early in the morning…

… Kicked it with the very hospitible, and talented, Juicy The Emissary.  His folks treated us like kings. Took a dip in their AWESOME pool and took in some Texas Sunshine– I needed it too I was rocking the farmer’s tan bad it was embarassing.  We caught up on some rest, E did tied up some loose ends on a song. We grabbed some grub at Sweetwater Grill and then headed out to the sticks to rock and improptu porch party…

… The party was out of control, two kegs killed in a matter of hours, then Quanstar and I took the mics to treat the tenacious Texans in attendance  to an improvised selection of United Underworld lyrical fury.  We proved our professionalism as beats came all the way out of left field but we had ‘em snappin’ and that was all that mattered.  Even Evaready over came his city-boy-in-the-country nerves and spit a few verses with us.  After that Denton’s own Pudg riled folks up even more with his set before the heros of the evening, The Wee Beasties took to the porch to give the kids what they really wanted.  Despite being peeled off of the ground moments before the set the lead singer courageously plowed through the entire set with such fury he no longer needed clothes.  Once the dust settled on that extravaganza we headed back to Denton for some much needed slumber…

Day Two (8/7/2010) Word Association @ Triple Crown, San Marcos, TX

…Awoke in Denton around noonish to a bountiful breakfast spread courtesy of the ever hospitible Coulter family.  Ate unitl I couldn’t eat any more (one of my personal rules of the road, never turn down free food as always eat as much of it as you can, no telling when or where the next meal is coming from) then we packed it in to the car and headed north towards San Marcos…

…Landed in town with plenty of time to spare so we took in some quick vittles and even had time to spare to go over the set, imagine that.  Got settled in at Triple Crown and enjoyed some boom bap courtesy of the DJ, Chief, who also got the mic warmed up with his set that included a song with an At The Drive In reference, oh Texas.  Then Dallas’ own Lejend took to the stage leading us through selections from his “Metropolis” mixtape and treating us to a few selections from his up coming release “From Slavery To Presidency”…

… Then the time had come for us to do what we had traveled these many miles to do, and we did it with such polished confidence that I would easily put it as one of our top sets.  It was captured on video compliments of Ben and Tomas which I will try to have up for y’all soon…

…After the set we made a V-line for Georgia, stopping for a nap somewhere south of Austin and then soldiering on for the remaining miles of the 18 or so hour drive home.  Everyone made it back to Atlanta safe and sound Sunday night and it was back to the normal grind by Monday…

…I always enjoy these trips, in fact I usually don’t want to come back.  Perhaps it is my migratory nature or innate restlessnes.  Perhaps it’s the fact that I return home to silence and solitude.  Whatever it is, I consider myself built for this life, it is one that suits me like no other and as I return to “normal” life in the A I know nothing will feel right until I am back out there hand delivering this music to any and all who stand close enough to hear it…

thanks I love y’all

take care of yourselves and each other

GG
