Google N.O.R.T.H. Coalition, just do it. Once you do you will understand why I said that. I don’t like to compare artists to other artists because I think it is unfair. Reason being that so many factors stand between an artist and his/her audience and there is no way to peg down the origin of a particular idea. That being said, upon first listen I can definitely draw some Little Brother parallels. They are by no means biting LB they are simply carrying the torch with a similar blend of soulful, cinematic beats providing a backdrop to no-nonsense lyrics that appeal to true school East Coast sensibilities while remaining distinctly southern. N.O.R.T.H. Coalition have–through their lyrical mastery and musical savvy– made their case to be the voice of a region that is in need of a voice. The Carolinas are a beautiful place filled with proud people who have been forced to build their fortunes out of blood sweat and red clay. I know this because I grew up around here and have witnessed the power of creation in action…
…What I’m getting at is that this part of the world possesses a deeply seeded tradition of independent spirit and a do-it-yourself ethos that will not ever be shaken. N.O.R.T.H. Coalition are carrying on that tradition and doing so in fine fashion. Listen to tracks like “Hip-Hop Blues” and “Stay Focused” and hear for yourself the scope and versatility. All I can say is that these guys’ music moved me and it should move you if you are not too jaded and cynical to appreciate heart and innovation…
